Sustainability
Putting on an event has an impact on the environment. Minimising this impact is a priority for the Montreux Jazz Festival. Transport is responsible for an average of 70% of CO2 emissions from festivals. Other factors include catering, waste management and energy consumption. Here are the measures taken by the Festival to minimise its impact in each of these areas.
Environment policy
DownloadTRANSPORT
As an urban festival, the MJF is ideally located a stone’s throw from Montreux station and the main regional bus routes. Several initiatives have been put in place to encourage the use of public transport and limit the use of private motorised vehicles.
- SBB trains: more night trains from Montreux to Lausanne, Geneva and Sion.
- VMCV buses: Free VMCV buses (from 6pm). On the 201, 204 and 291 lines, the frequency will be increased at peak times and the timetable will run continuously until the end of the night every evening of the festival.
- Creation of a bus service linking the centre of Montreux directly from Thun, Bern and Fribourg (Dysli transport company).
- 3 cycle parks in the centre of the festival with a total capacity of around 250 spaces.
- 3 motorised two-wheeler car parks near the main Festival entrances (approx. 200 spaces).
- Car pooling facilitated through the Tribulive web platform.
- Limiting car traffic in the town of Montreux: Removal of surface parking spaces and closure of the Grand-Rue between 5pm and 2am (accessibility for residents, public transport, bicycles and Festival operations).
ENERGY
- The electricity consumed by the Festival is a 100% from Romandy and renewable, coming from hydraulic, solar and wind energy certified by our partner Romande Energie.
- The Festival does not use a generator and supplies itself solely through the existing electricity network.
- 90% of the total lighting on the Festival site and stages is composed of LEDs.
CATERING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT
- The Festival has introduced a charter for catering stands that bans single-use plastic and favours local products. Each stand must also offer at least one vegetarian option.
- Cups are returnable and reusable.
- Waste management is handled through 100% Swiss channels.
- Installation of an on-site waste collection centre for sorting 10 types of waste and recycling PET, aluminium, glass, paper, cardboard, scrap metal and wood.
- A team of more than 70 people, the Green Team, works around the clock to ensure that the site is clean and that waste is managed and sorted.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Around 80% of the Festival’s infrastructure is reused year after year. Much of the furniture, bars, decorations, walls, floors and lighting are stored, transformed and recycled between editions.
BIODIVERSITY AND NATURE CONSERVATION
Every August, the Festival funds and organises an underwater lake clean-up in areas near the Festival site.
PARTNERSHIP ROMANDE ENERGIE
In collaboration with our sustainability partner, Romande Energie, we analysed our carbon footprint and energy impact in 2024. This process enabled us to identify targeted, high-impact measures, which are now being implemented:
- a 100% renewable and local electricity supply
- an improvement in energy efficiency, in particular by optimising cooling installations
- an increase in soft mobility facilities for the public
This partnership gives the festival a concrete, structured approach, planned for the long term.
SWISSTAINABLE
The Montreux Jazz Festival participates in the Swisstainable sustainability program, classified at level II – engaged. The Swisstainable program brings together companies and organizations from across the Swiss tourism sector. Through our participation, we commit to promoting the continued sustainable development of the company, closely monitor the measures taken in the area of sustainability and thus make a concrete contribution to sustainable tourism in Switzerland.
